Vārkarī Sampradāya

The Vārkarī tradition of Maharashtra (13th c. onward) is a devotional movement centred on the god Viṭṭhala of Pandharpur, carried by the abhaṅga poetry of sant-poets such as Jñāneśvar, Nāmdev and Tukārām and the annual pilgrimage (wārī).

Historical development

Modern transmission

The Pandharpur pilgrimage and its devotional singing continue on a mass scale today.
